Jallianwala Bagh: History
During the time of the Sikh Empire, Jallianwala Bagh was owned by the family of Himmat Singh, who was one of the Five Beloved Ones in Sikhism. It is thought that it used to be a garden or garden house. By 1919, Jallianwala Bagh was just a piece of uneven land surrounded by a 10-feet-high wall with only one exit.
On April 13, 1919, General Reginald Dyer of the British Army banned all public meetings of four or more people in Amritsar. But since it was Baisakhi Day, the main religious festival of the Sikhs, many people gathered at Jallianwala Bagh to celebrate. This crowd included men, women, and children. When Dyer found out about the gathering, he went there with his soldiers, blocked the main exit, and ordered his men to fire at the unarmed crowd. The shooting went on for almost 10 minutes until the soldiers ran out of bullets.
In addition to the many people who were killed by the bullets, several others died in the stampede that happened because of the firing. Some people, in their desperation to escape, jumped into a 20-foot deep well inside the garden and died there. British officials said that 379 people were killed in this massacre and around 1200 were injured. However, the Indian National Congress believed that around 1000 people had died and more than 1500 were wounded.
This event, known as the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre or the Amritsar Massacre, is one of the most tragic incidents in India’s history. To honor the martyrs of that day, the Government of India built a memorial inside the garden in 1951.
Jallianwala Bagh Architecture
The Entrance Gate
As you enter Jallianwala Bagh, the first thing you notice is the entrance gate. This gate is made of red brick and has a grand, sturdy look. It symbolizes the strength and resilience of the people who suffered here. The gate leads you into the garden, where you begin to see more of the memorial’s features.
The Central Memorial
At the heart of Jallianwala Bagh stands the central memorial, also known as the Flame of Liberty. This tall, red stone structure looks like a large, eternal flame. It was built to honor the lives lost during the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. The memorial is simple yet striking, with inscriptions in multiple languages, reminding visitors of the unity and diversity of India.
The Martyrs' Well
One of the most poignant parts of Jallianwala Bagh is the Martyrs’ Well. During the massacre, many people jumped into this well to escape the bullets. Today, the well is surrounded by a low wall, and a plaque nearby tells its story. This part of the garden is often filled with flowers and offerings from visitors paying their respects.
The Bullet Marks
Walking through Jallianwala Bagh, you can see the bullet marks on the walls of the buildings surrounding the garden. These marks have been preserved to show the intensity of the firing. The walls serve as a silent witness to the violence that took place. Visitors often stop to observe these marks closely, feeling the weight of history.
The Museum
Within Jallianwala Bagh, there is a small museum that provides more information about the massacre. The museum’s architecture blends with the rest of the garden, using simple, traditional designs. Inside, you can find photographs, documents, and personal stories of those affected by the event. This helps visitors connect with the history on a deeper level.
